Zoom lens

A zoom lens is a camera lens with a variable focal length by means of a mechanical adjustment of the internal lens elements — in simplest terms, a lens that lets you get "up close" to a faraway subject. A zoom lens is composed of multiple lens elements, and by moving one lens element relative to the other(s) the scene captured will magnify or reduce in size. Usually named by the longest to shortest focal length (i.e. 28 -70 mm), zoom lenses can be found in still cameras, video cameras, projectors, and other optical devices. Although some photographers still prefer a fixed focal length lens (prime lens), modern optics are allowing both point-and-shoot and SLR/DSLR zoom lenses to rival the quality of prime lenses.
