XLR connector

XLR connectors are used in professional audio systems, light controls and sound equipment to link balanced connections in a plug-and-socket format. The XLR plug can have anywhere from 2 to 6 pins and a corresponding number of receptacles in the proper socket, with 3 pins being the most common for audio equipment. This connector can be used in live audio sessions more easily than other cables because of the unique distribution of the plugs, which allow the grounding pin to attach to the socket first, reducing external signals or distortion when switching plug-ins during concerts and other audio presentations. Because XLRs support a balanced signal, they can be used across longer distances than other cables as well. The abbreviation XLR comes from Cannon's X-series connectors, which added a Latch to make plug-ins more sturdy and a Rubber compound to secure electrical connections.
