Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi, also represented as WiFi, is a limited-range wireless technology used for connecting computers and devices to wireless local area networks, typically for internet access.

Although many assume that WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity, just as HiFi is short for HIgh Fidelity, this is not the case. WiFi is actually a common representation of the official trade name Wi-Fi. The term Wi-Fi iteslf is not short for anything, but does represent all variations of IEEE 802.11 wireless connections, including 802.11a/b/g/n.

WiFi connections can also be used to connect two devices in a wireless peer-to-peer connection, or ad-hoc wireless network, for transfering files back and forth between the devices without the use of an internet connection or other intermediary devices in the network.
