Watt

A watt is a measure of power, often seen in terms of amplifier ratings and device power needs. It takes one watt to raise one amp of current by one volt; watts can be thought of as amps multiplied by volts.

Consumption of energy by household devices is often measured in terms of kilowatt hours. As a watt is a measure of energy use over time, multiplying watts by a length of time, in this case hours, gives a result in terms of absolute energy consumed. The kilo- prefix is used just to bring the numbers down to a more manageable level.

For instance, a 100-watt light bulb that runs on 120 volts would use 0.83 amps current and, when used for a day straight, would consume 2.4 kilowatt hours of energy.
