VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a term for a communication technology which utilizes the Internet (or potentially other network) to transmit a user's voice and, in some cases, streaming video. Increasingly, VoIP is being used to replace the traditional landline. Using the public switched telephone network (PSTN) has a number of limitations which are overcome by means of VoIP. By way of a single broadband connection, multiple telephone calls can be transmitted simultaneously if necessary, theoretically ending the days of "tying up the family phone line". Additionally VoIP offers a number of features at no additional charge that traditional phone companies usually charge the customer some extra monthly cost, including conference calling, caller ID, call forwarding, and location independence. With location independence, a user can simply take their VoIP phone anywhere that has an internet connection and place and receive calls via the same phone number they use at home. In addition to feature analogous to traditional telephony, the fact that the phone is communicating via the same data network as a user's PC has given rise to new interfacing possibilities.
