Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

UMPC

UMPC refers to an Ultra Mobile PC, or a small and affordable computing device originally mentioned in 2006 as a description for mobile devices with 7-inch screens. While a UMPC may be confused with an ultraportable laptop such as the MacBook Air, UMPCs usually weigh under 3 pounds while ultraportables weigh more. The definition has been widened to include devices with screens 4 to 10-inches in size, running any operating system, and performing more than one computing function. One of the affordable UMPC examples is the ASUS EeePC 4G, a two-pound, $400 laptop running on a Linux OS with 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of storage.

In 2008, Intel begin to use the term MID, or Mobile Internet Device, instead of UMPC. This newer term is interchangeable with UMPC.
