Trackpad

A trackpad is a touch sensitive pointing device typically implemented in laptop computers. Trackpads have gradually moved into prominence over the years due to their accuracy and ease of building into notebooks. Previous notebook pointing devices, like trackpoints and trackballs, either offered less accuracy than mice or would get dirty and required frequent maintenance. In recent years, trackpads have added scrolling options using strips on the side specifically designated for scrolling or, in the case of Apple computers, by placing two fingers on the pad to gesture a scroll.

With the introduction of Apple's late 2008 model MacBooks, Apple set a new trend in trackpads by creating them using capacitive glass, which allows for up to four finger gestures.
