tethering

Tethering refers to the practice of using a mobile phone to provide an internet connection for another mobile device, typically a laptop. Sometimes referred to as "phone-as-modem," tethering involves connecting the phone to the laptop either via a data cable (typically USB) or wirelessly via Bluetooth. The phone is then connected to the internet via a dial-up networking protocol, allowing it to provide pass-through access to the connected laptop.

Not all cell phone carriers allow phone tethering, and many that do require a special plan with a fee. Usually this fee is less than the typical cost of a dedicated 3G laptop card and can often be turned off and on as needed.
