Subwoofer

A subwoofer is a speaker with the specific purpose of reproducing the low range of audible frequencies, usually measuring from 8 inches to around 20 inches in diameter. The lowest tones in any audio source (about 150Hz to 20Hz) are challenging for a traditional integrated or standard satellite speaker to reproduce. So, rising to popularity in the 1970s, subwoofers came into increasing usage when the limitations of vinyl were overcome by cassette, and later compact discs. Later, in the 1990's, DVDs often had a dedicated channel for low frequencies, with these sounds being best reproduced by a subwoofer. Available as either passive (powered by an external amplifier, thereby limiting its strength by the wattage of the amplifier) and powered (using a self-contained speaker-amplifier combination), the subwoofer has become commonplace in movie venues, home theater systems, and car stereos.
