SSD

An SSD, or solid-state drive, is a type of storage device that utilizes solid-state memory to emulate the method in which hard disk drives store data.  It can use either RAM or flash memory, and often has a higher cost but faster access times than a comparable HDD.

In layman's terms, a solid-state drive is a storage drive that acts as a normal hard drive in your system.  Because there are no moving parts, they are quieter, have faster read (accessing files already on the drive) times, and are less prone to mechanical failure than a hard drive.  However, they are more expensive, consume more power, and have slow write times than a hard drive.  They also don't come as large (yet).
