Smartphone

Nokia E71The term "smartphone" doesn't have a standardized, industry-wide definition but the term generally refers to high-end cell phones that emphasize broad versatility, having taken on certain main functions of PCs. A smartphone usually has mobile versions of software applications like an email client, a web browser, or a word processor in addition to a full compliment of cell phone cababilities. Internet functions like web browsing and downloading are much more demanding on the carrier's network than regular cell phone calls, and so smartphones are most of the impetus for carriers to upgrade their infrastructure to provide expanded bandwidth, which is why carriers currently strive to provide connectivity via 3G and WiFi.

Most major cell phone manufacturers offer a series of smartphones. Famous lines include RIM's BlackBerry, Palm's Centro and Treo, and Apple's iPhone. There are also a variety of operating systems designed specifically for smartphone hardware, including Symbian OS (found on many Nokia models), Apple's iPhone OS, RIM's BlackBerry OS, and Microsoft's Windows Mobile. Smartphones typically include a small QWERTY keyboard, trackball, and/or touchscreen to navigate the breadth of applications.
