S-Video

S-video, short for "Super Video" or "Separated Video," is a single cable carrying multiple pin outputs which produce a higher quality video signal than that of composite. S-Video carries video information as two separate signals, chroma and luminance, rather than simply one lower quality signal. S-Video never broke out as a high-end standard, though in the mid-90s, aspiring videographers could couple S-Video with S-VHS to produce higher quality masters which could then be dubbed to lower quality VHS tapes. S-Video still remains as a legacy analog standard, though component video has largely replaced S-Video as a higher quality alternative.
