RPM
RPM stands for revolutions per minute, the rotational speed at which hard drives operate. Common speeds include 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm, though certain high-performance drives are available at 10,000 rpm or higher.
The faster a hard drive spins, the more data it can read in a given period of time, increasing drive throughput and read/write speeds. As a hard drive read/write head can only access data that passes under the reach of its arm, the faster a drive spins, the more often the head will have the opportunity to access a particular spot on the disk, decreasing seek times and reducing latency. Thus, a higher rpm number is generally better when purchasing a HDD.
