RAID

RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, and allows multiple disks to be chained together to simultaneously read and write data. RAID has a variety of different configurations, sometimes referred to as RAID levels, which define the manner in which the drives operate. Most RAID configurations are created to facilitate redundancy and backup, though some RAID setups are created for speed purposes, and forgo the typical backup methods. Two drives writing in tandem with a fast enough RAID controller can offer better performance than that of a single drive, though the data on both drives is required to be used together, as a single drive cannot operate without the others.
