Quad-core

A type of multi-core technology, a quad-core system is comprised of two individual silicon dies. Each of these two CPUs is equal to a Core 2 duo (dual-core) processor. Analogous to the difference between a dual-core processor and two separate processors, a system that employs quad-core technology is not as fast as a system with four dies, each with a separate socket such as the AMD Quad FX platform. Some software that supports simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) will be able to utilize two dual-core processors, but may be unable to access the capabilities of four separate processors. In common computing tasks, the quad-core system is unnecessary. However in applications such as video editing, 3D rendering, and multi-threaded games like Gears of War and Crysis, the processes of the software can greatly benefit from a quad-core CPU.
