Podcast

A podcast is a self contained online broadcast typically distributed through a syndication means like RSS. Podcasts have gained in popularity since the advent of the iPod and the iTunes Music Store adding podcast support in 2005. Podcasts are downloaded with so-called "podcatchers," which download RSS feeds specially equipped with tags defining a URL to a media file. Podcast traditionally has referred to audio files, but the term is also applied to video distributed over the internet as whole files.

Podcasts sometimes are mistakenly used interchangeably with video on-demand. While Podcasts are available on-demand, video on-demand is a larger term which encompasses internet podcasts as well as cable based on-demand programming.
