placeshifting

Placeshifting refers to the practice of viewing media stored elsewhere on a remote device via an internet connection or cellular data network. The term is a cousin to timeshifting, the practice of recording media to watch at a later, more convenient time.

Consumer electronics devices and software can provide placeshifting functionality from a home media device such as a television, cable box or DVR as well as from media stored on a computer. Sling Media's Slingbox and Sony's LocationFree are examples of the former, allowing you to stream media from your home entertainment system to another device such as a computer, a cell phone or internet tablet, or to another television in the house or elsewhere. Software solutions such as MythTV, Orb, and SageTV fall into the latter category, placeshifting media on your PC to a remote device, typically a laptop or a phone; products such as Nullriver's MediaLink and Connect360 handle placeshifting duties from a Macintosh computer to a PS3 or Xbox 360 game console, respectively.
