pixel
Pixel is a term that refers to the smallest singular component of a digital image. The word pixel is a contraction of the words picture (pix) and element (el). Arranged as round dots, squres, or rectangles, pixels are traditionally arranged in a two-dimensional grid. In a digital image, the pixel is a representation of the original image usually consisting of some combination of color components (e.g. red, green, blue). In an image, as the number of pixels increases the accuracy and clarity of the original image will increase. The term megapixel (meaning 1 million pixels) can refer to the number of pixels in a digital image, the number of image sensor elements found in a digital camera, and also the number of display elements in a computer monitor or television.
