A PDF (Portable Document Format) is a type of file that may include text, images, and hyperlinks, as well as specific fonts, all of which are embedded in the document itself. It was developed by a company called Adobe in 1993.
Although early PDFs could only be created using Adobe's Acrobat software, acceptance of the format is widespread enough that multiple creation methods have evolved, including Mac OS X's "Save As PDF..." feature, and some websites that can convert text files into PDFs.
The PDF is an open standard file format that can be accessed in any operating system and on a wide range of devices.
