PDA

A personal digital assistant or PDA is a handheld device typically imbued with calendaring, contact and task management functions as well as other basic computing functions. Falling somewhere between a cell phone and a laptop on the mobile device spectrum, PDAs typically have a large touchscreen typically controlled via stylus.

The Apple Newton (below), released in 1993, was the device that first introduced the concept of the handheld mobile organizer, but it was Palm's PalmPilot (at right) that popularized the form a few years later. As smartphones continue to become more powerful and ubiquitous, the term "PDA" has generally fallen out of use in tech discourse.
