PCI

The most widely used way to connect hardware to the CPU, PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) was introduced in 1993. As a peripheral bus, PCI expansion slots allow a computer user to connect devices such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet PC Cards, and other devices like SCSI and RAID cards. Designed by Intel, Compaq, and Digital, the PCI bus is found in most computers making the competing ISA bus of the early 1990's obsolete. Today, computers largely have PCI slots along with an AGP or PCI express slot for the computer's graphics card. In addition to the standard PCI form factor, there are other slots with different shapes and sizes such as Mini PCI for Wi-Fi network cards integrated into laptops.
