Optical Zoom

Optical zoom refers to the zooming capabilities of a physical camera lens, which extends or contracts to change the focal length. Users control the optical zoom to adjust how much of a subject the lens will capture. The optical zoom capabilities of a camera will be affected by the type of lens used. A telephoto lens has a narrow viewing angle for focusing on a single subject, a wide-angle lens has a viewing angle more suitable for photographing a wide area, and a number of lens range between the two.

Typically, higher-end camera system such as cameras made for professional filming or DSLR cameras (or traditional 35mm cameras) have only optical zoom functions, while common compact digital cameras have both an optical zoom lens and a digital zoom capability. Cell phone cameras usually have only digital zoom capabilities.
