Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Open source

Open source is the philosophy (and licensing agreement) behind bundling software with its original source code, with the intent that users can modify, build, change and redistribute the source code as new applications, though with some restrictions. Open source aficinados tend to be developers familiar with the Linux operating system, and often model open source projects after the succes of Linux. Open source projects typically are less commercial in nature, and instead perform a more altruistic or artistic function, intending to spur further development based on demonstrated examples of source code. End User License Agreements (EULAs) govern the rules by which open source software can be used and redistributed. Developers tend to prefer the Gnu Public License, but there are many other types of open source licenses dictating use of original source code.
