NTFS

NTFS, an acronym for New Technology File System, is a file system developed by Microsoft for use in Windows products based on the NT kernel. Dating back to NT4, NTFS is a more modern filesystem than its sibling, FAT32. Unlike FAT32, NTFS supports files larger than 4GB in size, and also supports partition sizes larger than 2TB. NTFS partitions can be case-sensitive and journaled, making the file system more readily indexed for searching.

NTFS is the preferred file system for all versions of Windows past NT4, which includes Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows Server products. Users wanting to format file systems using FAT32 in these operating systems are limited to 32GB partition sizes, maximum, as Microsoft is pushing to migrate users to NTFS.
