MP3

MP3 is an audio format popular for its prevalance in online music distribution, both legally and illegally. Originally developed in the early 90s as a part of the first MPEG specification, MP3 is short for MPEG-1 Layer 3, which is the layer pertaining to audio. Though much more efficient and effective codecs have been developed, MP3 has maintained a spot as the preeminent digital audio format. Portable Media Players aren't referred by their proper nomenclature, but are largely called MP3 players, despite playing other audio formats and even video.

MP3's proper successor is AAC, which is three generations newer than MP3, and can produce better quality files at lower bitrates. AAC is the format sold by Apple's iTunes Music store.
