Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

MKV

MKV files are a type of Matroska multimedia container files, an open standard for packaging media content. Specifically, MKV files include video data, and may include audio and subtitles as well.

Similar to how AVI files work as containers, MKV isn't a video compression scheme itself, but groups together compressed audio and compressed video streams into one package. The format includes support for marking chapter stops, multiple subtitle languages, and adding extra metadata to files.

MKV has gained notoriety for being the preferred format pirates use to release high definition TV and movie content, often encoded in H.264. Although the format is open-source and free to use, it's not supported by many hardware devices or major software developers, including Microsoft, which doesn't support MKV in its Media Center line.
