Mini DV

Mini DV is a digital format for sound and picture recording. Among the most common formats, a Mini DV cassette measures 2.6 x 1.9 x 0.5 inches (l x w x h), though the tape itself is only 0.25 inches thick. Available in recording lengths of 30, 60, and 80 minutes, the largest of the three constitutes about 11 GB of data. Recording and reproducing much more accurate audio and video than earlier analog camcorder media, Mini DV also allows easy transfer to a PC via a Firewire (IEEE 1394) cable. The tapes are similar to DVCAM and DVPRO tapes in size and function, however they differ in the actual recording format. Mini DV has allowed camcorder manufacturers to reduce the size of their video cameras, some no larger than a user's hand.
