metered broadband
Metered broadband is a term referring to a business model surrounding internet usage in which users pay per total amount of bandwidth consumed, typically monthly, in direct opposition to the typical current flat-rate model in the U.S. in which customers pay a single monthly service fee for theoretically unlimited amounts of downloading. Under metered broadband systems, customers typically face overage charges for exceeding their monthly bandwidth allowances.
Multiple attempts by various ISPs to implement metered broadband caps in the United States have been met with strong customer and industry resistance. Most recently, Time Warner Cable backed off its plans to expand metered broadband trials into more markets after loud public outcry.
