Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Java

Java, and its subsequent Java Virtual Machine, is a programming language originally lauded for its cross platform compatibility and memory management. Java, in practice, tends to be a very resource intensive language, and as such programs coded in Java are known for a certain amount of overhead. Java has extended past the desktop, however, developing Java Platform Micro Edition (formerly J2ME.) Micro Edition applications can run on a variety of devices, including most Nokia devices, as well as most RIM BlackBerry devices.

Java applications, known as Applets, were formerly widespread on the web, but due to overhead, applet-style applications have been largely replaced by Flash and Javascript.
