IP address

An internet protocol address, or IP address, is a numeric string that is assigned to computers that are participating in a network through TCP/IP. The address is assigned according to the IPv4 standard and is 32 bits. However, a new standard (IPv6) that utilizes 128 bit addresses has been developed due to the rapid filling of new IP addresses.. Addresses can be just about anything across the internet, but LAN IP addresses on home networks are most often 192.168.x.x..
