Infrared

Infrared is a part of the light spectrum that falls at wavelengths outside the visible light spectrum, at wavelengths below red. Infrared light is typically used in consumer electronics as a simple way to utilize wireless communication. Sometimes abbreviated IR, the technology was first popularized in remote controls for televisions, but then gained some status as PDAs like the Palm series utilized IR as a means to transmit business cards and other information.

IR's biggest downfall is that it requires an uninterrupted line of sight to operate effectively. As such, IR has been gradually phased out of PDAs in favor of Bluetooth and WiFi, though IR is still the predominant standard in remote controls.
