IM (Instant messaging)

Instant messaging (IM), or "chat", is a type of service that allows real-time, text-based communication between two or more users over a network. Use of IM typically involves an IM client application run by each user, although web-baed alternatives are becoming popular. Popular applications include AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! IM (YIM), and Google's GChat. Some applications feature additional functionality, such as real-time video of the users involved, but the classic definition applies to text messages. Over time, extensive usage has driven the adoption of IM-specific slang in an effort to reduce the number of keystrokes needed to communicate an idea. Some of the more popular slang words are LOL (Laughing Out Loud), BRB (Be Right Back), and IMHO (In My Humble Opinion).
