high definition

High definition is a display technology offering higher resolution video content, typically at 720p, 1080i or 1080p screen resolutions. Movies, television and video games are all increasingly offered in high definition formats, with the Blu-ray disc emerging as the winner of the industry war for high capacity optical disc standard format over rival HD DVD.

In television, HDTV is a digital television broadcasting system with higher resolution than traditional television systems broadcasting in standard-definition or SDTV. HDTV is digitally broadcast because digital television (DTV) requires less bandwidth if sufficient video compression is used, freeing up parts of the spectrum to allow more channel program and use of the analog spectrum for emergency purposes.
