HFS+
HFS is an acronym for hierarchical file system and is the primary file system used by modern Macintosh OS computers manufactured by Apple. HFS was the original file system implemented in the original Macintosh back in the 1980s, and the modern version of the file system, HFS+, was introduced to alleviate some of the original problems with the older file system.
Disks using HFS+ are not readable by Windows computers, so users needing cross platform compatibility typically opt for the FAT32 file system for external disks.
