Hard disk drive

A hard disk drive (abbreviated HDD or just HD) is described as a non-volatile storage device which uses a set of spinning disks with magnetic surfaces to store digitally encoded information. Though early HDDs employed exchangeable media, modern hard drives consist of a sealed unit containing the fixed disks, or platters, and a read/write head for accessing the magnetic surfaces. Developed for the IBM accounting computer in 1956, the first HDDs suffered from head crash damage, a problem still present in modern HDDs. The rudiments of HDD technology have since been expanded to include storage devices for digital video recorders, digital audio players, digital cameras, PDAs, and recent video game systems. The most recent hard drives now have a capacity of 1.5TB, or 1,500GB.
