Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Hackintosh

Hackintosh is an informal term for an x86-based PC running a hacked copy of MacOS. Apple restricts its software to Apple-sold hardware by using a BIOS-like Extensible Firmware Interface and requiring the CPU to support certain instructions. Hackers bypassed these restrictions in shortly over a month of the first Intel release of MacOS software, bypassing EFI checks and emulating missing SSE3 instructions for older SSE2 processors.

Later hackers developed full kernel hacks to add support for as many PC hardware configurations as possible. The most recent trend is in emulating the EFI functions, making the PC appear as genuine Apple hardware to the OS. These hacks have been commercialized, offering a simple USB dongle that performs everything necessary for the hack. With one of these systems in place, users can use original, unpatched MacOS install discs and receive online updates from Apple.
