H.264
H.264 is a lossy video codec that is used to compress video from large file sizes down into smaller file sizes. H.264, also known as MPEG4 AVC, is part of the MPEG4 standard of video compression technologies. Unlike its less complex sibling, MPEG4 BP, H.264 videos maintain a higher quality and have less tendancy toward artifacting, though the computing power required to compress and decompress H.264 videos is much greater.
H.264 is also a part of the Blu-ray and HD-DVD standards. Typically, Blu-ray and HD-DVD videos utilize high bitrate MPEG2, the same codec used in DVDs, to compress video. Videos compressed in H.264 allow higher quality files and smaller file sizes, and thereby stretch the capacity of HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs even further.
