Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

GPU

GPU is an acronym for Graphics Processing Unit, and is the core chip in modern 3D graphics. A GPU is responsible for many of the core functions of graphics processing, similarly to the way a CPU is responsible for the basic processing tasks of a computer. A GPU offloads many of the complex graphical tasks of creating and managing 3D polygons from the CPU, freeing the CPU to do tasks like game logic and physics.

GPUs tend to use their own RAM as well, typically built into the graphics card, and load many of the textures applied to polygons without having to use system RAM. In addition to the basics of calculating polygons, the GPU also calculates vertex light points, and is responsible for shading elements according to the available light in a scene.
