Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3z)

A member of the ethernet networking family, Gigabit Ethernet offers the same 10x magnitude speed improvement over Fast Ethernet that 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet offered over 10 Mbps Ethernet, bringing its maximum bandwidth in Mbps or megabits per second to 1000 Mbps. Gigabit Ethernet uses Category 5 twisted pair cabling similar to both 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps ethernet (additional wire pairs in the cables accomodate the increased speed), and is also referred to by its Ethernet Standard name IEEE 802.3z.
