geocaching

Geocaching is world-wide game based on using of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to find various hidden "treasures" known as geocaches. The game of geocaching is played through all continents and can vary in difficulty based on where the geocache is planted. Coordinates are given out through one of many geocaching websites, which can then be downloaded by players and used for hiking or scavenging until the treasure is found. Geocaches, usually sealed in waterproof containers, are simple keepsakes or momentos that are renewed by each new discoverer.

The game also has several layers of complexity, with objects known as Travel Bugs or Geocoins being passed from person to person throughout a country, often with a certain destination in mind. Several different GPS manufacturers advertise geocaching on their websites, including Garmin, while others such as Groundspeak market geocaching applications that can be downloaded to GPS trackers or GPS-enabled cell phones to facilitate in playing the game.
