Firewire 400

FireWire 400 is the older, more commonly used format of FireWire. FireWire 400 runs, unsurprisingly, at 400 megabits per second, which is a sustained throughput speed. FireWire 400 is popularly used with miniDV video cameras, and can transfer the DV footage to a computer for capture. FireWire 400 is also used as a method of connecting external devices like hard drives, and has benefits over USB like the ability to daisy chain multiple devices together. FireWire 400 was eventually superseded by FireWire 800, which used a different connector to achieve higher speeds, though FireWire 400 devices can be connected to FireWire 800 ports through the use of an inexpensive adapter.
