Femtocell

A femtocell is a small cell phone access point, typically installed in business or residential settings, that routes cell phone calls over the internet. Femtocells can be used as a way to augment coverage in areas that have weak signals but require cell access. Like their WiFi based counterpart, UMA, femtocells route calls over the internet using proprietary VoIP protocols, which eventually end up heading to service providers networks, then out to the general calling network. Unlike UMA, femtocells don't require any special phones or other special hardware, other than the femtocell unit, since the signal going to the cell phone is a standard cell phone signal.
