EV-DO

EV-DO is a high-speed wireless broadband standard used by cell phones and other mobile devices to give users access to the internet. EV-DO, or Evolution, Data Only (also Evolution, Data Optimized) is known by several abbreviations, including EvDO, 1xEV-DO and 1xEvDO. EV-DO is one of the two primary 3G wireless standards used to give laptops, phones, and other compatible devices internet connectivity without the need for WiFi hotspots. Because EV-DO sends data packets through wireless phone network one at a time instead of in a constant stream, the standard saves bandwidth and improves speed, with a maximum throughput of 2.4 megabits per second. EV-DO is offered by both Verizon and Sprint, with both providers offering limited but growing coverage concentrated on America's metropolitan areas. The competing 3G standard is known as W-CDMA.
