Ethernet (IEEE 802.3)

Ethernet is a family of computer networking technologies focused around setting up and maintaining Local Area Networks, or LANs.

In technical terms, Ethernet is a high-bandwidth network that runs on either a coaxial cable or a Cat 5 cable. All ethernet interfaces are based on a single frame, allowing different generations of ethernet technologies to interconnect.  The standards for the medium are defined as IEEE 802.3.

In layman's terms, ethernet refers to either the port, cord, or both that you use to connect your computer to a local network. It is used most often to connect computers together, either directly or through a router, in a method faster than using wireless communications.  Therefore, it is desirable for inter-office communications or gaming parties where data can be communicated faster through a Cat 5 cable than through a wireless connection.
