Dolby Digital

Dolby Digital is an audio encoding/decoding technology. Available as a number of different versions, the Dolby Digital family includes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Digital Surround EX, Dolby Digital Live, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD. Most popular as an audio standard for 5.1-channel surround sound, Dolby Digital can also transmit mono and two-channel (stereo) sound. For commercial movies, the soundtrack is recorded in Dolby Digital in the spaces between the sprocket holes of the film. This is done not only because of the allowance this gives to have both the analog audio track and Dolby Digital simultaneously, but also due to the fact that the sprocket hole line is durable and will resist wear. In the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel system, each of the six channels (5 channels reproducing the range of 3 Hz to 20 kHz, and 1 channel dedicated to the low frequencies of 3 to 120 Hz) is found on an independent track.
