Digital zoom

Digital zoom refers to a camera's ability to magnify an image through interpolation, the process of cropping an image and enlarging the chosen portion by electronically adding pixels. This is considered less reliable than zooming in optically by adjusting the physical lenses, but digital zooming is also less obtrusive and does not require a specific type of lens. Most digital cameras have both an optical and digital zoom option which can be multiplied to reach a maximum zooming capability. Mobile phone cameras, on the other hand, usually have digital zooms. Photographers may use a digital zoom to save space on their memory cards (fewer pixels and less data) or capture an image and apply a digital zoom later with photo editing software.
