Decibel
The decibel is a measure of sound intensity. It is one tenth of a Bel(B), and increases on a logarithmic scale that roughly corresponds to how the human ear perceives sound. For example two sounds of 140dB and 160dB are perceived as about the same (very loud) by us. While two sounds differing by only a 10 decibels on the quieter side of the spectrum will be readily distinguishable. For example, at 0dB, we hear almost nothing. Normal conversation is around 50dB, and a gunshot is about 140dB. Sounds about 85dB can cause damage to the aural organs and result in hearing loss in humans.
