CRT

CRT stands for cathode ray tube, a display technology used in most computer monitors and TVs before the advent of LCD and plasma displays. The first version of the cathode ray tube was actually invented as early as 1897 by a German physicist whose moniker gave the device its first name, the "Braun tube." Inside a CRT monitor, an electron beam is sent to the front of a screen covered in phosphor, which emits light when hit by the electrons. A number of filters process the beam of electrons into the appropriate colors per pixel of screen, making possible the display of moving pictures in natural colors.

One of the major drawbacks of CRT displays is the depth of their cabinets versus an LCD or plasma display of the same diagonal size. In no small part because of this factor, CRTs are generally being phased out in favor of LCD, plasma and OLED display technologies.
