Contrast ratio

Contrast ratio is a measurement of the difference between the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that a display is able to produce. Associated with LCD, Plasma, and projection television displays as well as computer monitors, contrast ratio has become a significant aspect of any display. The contrast ratio can also be thought of as the number of gray shades between full white and full black. Manufacturers test the contrast ratio in ideal conditions, usually a room where there is no light reflection from objects within or the walls of  the room. In a real-life situation the expressed ratio will be considerably greater than the perceived ratio. Common contrast ratios of recent televisions and computer monitors range anywhere from 800:1 up to the announcement of the XEL-1 OLED TV from Sony with a ratio of 1,000,000:1.
