codec

A codec is a method of encoding or decoding a digital stream of data. Codecs are typically employed as methods of compression for storing audio and video data efficiently with tradeoffs between file size and quality. Smaller file size generally means lesser quality and vice versa (if all of the original data is preserved the codec is referred to as lossless). There are a number of different standard codecs in use for both audio and video filetypes.
